Such Anticipation

Posted By On Mar 2013 | 0 Comments

March 1st, never has a date been so anticipated, Spring please don’t let us down. We really need for it to warm up a bit now, as when the ground temperature reaches five degrees the grass will start growing.

The alpacas really need the grass to come through especially the pregnant females. Nice spring grass will give them all a boost which they so desperately need at this time of year, in preparation for birthing. The absolutely best time in the ...

Bank Holiday

Posted By On May 2013 | 0 Comments

The bank holiday weekend has arrived which means Neil is home on the farm for an extra day. Friday evening ended with him asking for his weekend itinerary, he’s so well trained πŸ™‚Β Top of the Alpaca to do list is worming, which is much easier when there’s two of you as it is administered via injection. Neil gets the job of holding the alpacas steady while I get left in charge of the needles.

It sounds like a nasty job but ...

Manipulative Little Rotters

Posted By On Feb 2013 | 0 Comments

The crocs are still winning, which means my barn should be empty of at least the boys at night. Is it? No!

Every morning after yet again mucking out their pen, I say tonight’s the night boys, your staying out. Even one less pen to muck out would be a bonus, it is starting to feel like they’ve all been in for ever.

So I tell the boys it’s nice and dry, you have a field shelter with hay racks full of ...

Crystal Ball Anyone?

Posted By On Jul 2013 | 2 Comments

I’m at a bit of a loss, sitting here with my asus pad in front of me wondering just what to write the blog about today.

The girls have kindly been delivering their cria one at a time, perfectly spread out, giving me lots to write about.

But we’ve had no alpaca births for two days now, what’s going on?

I think I must have been taking them for granted and now it’s pay back time, they are going to make me wait ...

No Let Up On The Welly Ban

Posted By On Feb 2013 | 2 Comments

Friday is the 1st of March as I’m sure you are all aware and one can not help but remember last March and all the glorious weather it brought. In fact for the last few years March has been a good month for sunshine.

You can see where I’m heading :0)) I don’t want to put it in black and white in case I tempt fate but I will say there’s lot and lots of positive thinking going on here and ...

Sentry Duty

Posted By On May 2013 | 0 Comments

Well as you have already probably guessed by now the computer was wrong and we have had no alpaca births here as of yet. Blue has also come into her dates and so I am closely watching three females who are getting decidedly rounder but are showing no signs of delivering πŸ™

The weather has been stunning here for the last few days and looks set to continue, the alpacas can all be found sprawled out playing dead (alpaca sun bathing) ...

Crocs With Socks

Posted By On Feb 2013 | 1 Comments

Having had no rain for a few weeks and the ground being frozen solid I decided today would be a crocs with socks day as I am fed up to the back teeth of constantly wearing wellies.

I guessed that as long as the socks were thick enough my feet wouldn’t come to much harm in my crocs. I’ve had Neil telling me I’m mad and to put my wellies back on before I got frostbite in my toes. But I ...

One Relieved Alpaca Shepherdess

Posted By On Jul 2013 | 1 Comments

We had a very early start today as half the alpaca herd were due their vaccinations. The plan was to get in and out quick before it got too hot!

The last thing the alpacas need is me messing around with them in the middle of a hot summers day.

I wonder if they appreciated my thoughtfulness?

I seriously doubted it, all they see is me coming at them with a needle and I don’t think they appreciate that much whatever the time ...

Bit of a Domestic

Posted By On Feb 2013 | 1 Comments

The weather is cold but still dry so I’m definitely not complaining. The cold however is not conducive to standing around doing nothing and so has spurned me to get over my lazy day and knuckle back down to work.

One job I had to tackle pretty quickly was our next magazine advertisement, the deadline being tomorrow. Why oh why do I seem to leave everything to the last minute.

Armed with my camera I rushed around the place taking lots and ...

Hatching a Plan

Posted By On Apr 2013 | 0 Comments

Well it’s the 30th today and are we going to have an alpaca birth? Will the computer be right? So far Dora shows no signs of obliging, but the day is not done yet. Watch this space!

Neil is in the good books, and has earn’t him self lots of brownie points as he’s finally started the fronts of my stud pens.

The stud pen entrances come right of the race by the entrance to the barn. This is a very busy ...
